Alessandra Vittorini

Alessandra Vittorini is an architect with a degree in “Restoration of Monuments” and a PhD in “Territorial and Urban Planning” (Sapienza University of Rome), she has worked in the Ministry of Culture since 1990. In the complex scenario of the 2009 post-earthquake reconstruction, from 2012 to 2020 she was head of the L’Aquila Superintendency, since 2015 Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the City of L’Aquila and the Crater Municipalities, the first of the Italian Superintendencies to be invested with the task of integrated protection.

During her intense activity, centred primarily on the protection and recovery of the cultural heritage as a driving force for post-earthquake reconstruction, she promotes constant scientific dissemination, communication and participation actions for the entire community. Responsible for the restoration and reconstruction of the Basilica of Collemaggio, entirely managed by the Superintendency with internal professionalism both for the design (with the technical-scientific support of three universities) and for the direction of works. Completed in less than two years, the restoration received the “European Heritage/Europa Nostra Award 2020”, the only prize awarded to Italy in the “conservation” category.

Over the years, she follows and coordinates other important programmes related to the restoration and post-earthquake reconstruction of cultural heritage. She participates in international seminars on post-disaster reconstruction, including the ICOMOS International meetings in Paris and Istanbul (2016). She is one of the speakers at the Stati Generali del Paesaggio MiBACT (2017) and at the Technical Table for the construction of MAXXI L’Aquila’s new headquarters in the restored Palazzo Ardinghelli. Member of the Italian-French Joint Committee for the restoration of the Church of S. Maria del Suffragio in L’Aquila (2014-2018).

She lectures for postgraduate, doctorate and master’s courses, has spoken at numerous conferences and conventions on architecture and can boast publications of volumes, articles, essays and critical texts on architecture, urban planning, landscape and restoration.
